Ancient China's language was one of the oldest written languages (four thousand years ago). The language contains a series of symbols each representing a word or a phrase. A symbol is known as a character. There were two languages among the Chinese: Mandarin and Cantonese. These two languages created many dialects. A character is written in calligraphy. The languages in China today are very similar to Ancient China's languages.
